Staff Application Security Engineer
The Staff Application Security Engineer at Thumbtack will lead the technical direction for application security, developing roadmaps and addressing systemic security risks. This role involves designing secure architectures, implementing security tooling, and embedding security into development workflows. Collaboration with engineering and product leaders is essential to prioritize security investments aligned with business goals. Responsibilities also include conducting design reviews, threat modeling, mentoring engineers, and supporting incident response efforts.
Candidates should have over 8 years of experience in software engineering and application security, with a strong grasp of secure coding practices and application security frameworks. Expertise in secure system design, modern application security tools, and practices such as threat modeling and authentication is required. Experience with cloud-native systems (AWS and/or GCP) is essential. The role demands strong analytical skills, the ability to balance risk and maintainability, and excellent communication abilities to influence and explain complex security issues to diverse audiences.
The expected salary range for candidates in San Francisco, San Jose, New York City, or Seattle is $249,900 to $323,400. For those in Austin, Washington DC, California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, or Washington states, the range is $225,300 to $291,500. In all other U.S. locations, the range is $212,500 to $275,000. Actual salaries will vary based on factors such as job level, qualifications, skills, and proficiency.
