The Staff Software Engineer (Backend) at Tubi will play a pivotal role in defining and driving the architectural direction across multiple services and teams. This position requires a deep technical expertise and a strong organizational influence, operating beyond individual service ownership to impact large-scale distributed systems. The role is based in either San Francisco, CA, or New York, NY, with a hybrid work arrangement requiring in-office presence three days per week.

Key responsibilities include leading the design and evolution of distributed systems, ensuring long-term scalability, resilience, observability, and security. The engineer will drive cross-team technical alignment across client, infrastructure, product, ads, and content organizations. Mentoring senior engineers and elevating engineering standards across the team are also essential aspects of the role. Additionally, the position involves owning critical system design decisions that impact multiple platforms and contributing to domain leadership in areas such as Linear systems, EPG platforms, or time-based content architectures.

Candidates should have extensive experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems, with deep expertise in backend development, particularly in Elixir and Rust, or comparable languages. Strong architectural judgment with proven cross-team technical leadership is required. Experience with gRPC/Protocol Buffers, RESTful APIs, Kubernetes, and observability systems is essential. The role also demands demonstrated ability to lead complex, cross-functional initiatives and strong communication skills to articulate trade-offs and drive alignment. Familiarity with Linear content systems, EPG platforms, or other time-based scheduling architectures is preferred, along with hands-on experience building or supporting systems for large-scale live events with high concurrency and real-time demands.

The compensation for this role ranges from $227,200 to $324,500 annually, depending on education, skills, experience, and location. The position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, long-term incentive plan, and various benefits, including medical, dental, vision insurance, a 401(k) plan, paid time off, and other benefits in accordance with applicable plan documents.
