Staff Software Engineer (Availability)
OpenTable is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Diner Core Availability team, responsible for developing and maintaining the systems that power availability searches for diners worldwide. This team handles millions of diners and thousands of searches per second, ensuring fast and reliable booking options across OpenTable's global network. The role is based in Toronto, Canada, with a hybrid work schedule requiring two days per week in the downtown office.
In this position, you will design, implement, and evolve C#/.NET services and APIs that provide availability information to both internal and external consumers. You will own the architecture of availability search services and related caches, ensuring low-latency, high-throughput performance at a global scale. Your responsibilities will also include defining strategies for in-memory and distributed caching, leading the evolution of event-driven architectures, and making pragmatic trade-offs between delivery speed, technical quality, operational risk, and cost.
The ideal candidate has over five years of experience designing, implementing, and operating backend services in C#/.NET. You should have a proven track record in building and scaling high-throughput, low-latency services, deep hands-on experience with Redis and other cache technologies, and a solid understanding of event-driven architectures and Kafka. Strong experience with database systems, distributed systems fundamentals, and observability and performance tuning in production is also required.
