Staff Backend Engineer - Experiments
The Staff Backend Engineer - Experiments role at Canva involves leading the technical vision for Pilot, Canva's A/B testing and experimentation platform. This position is integral to evolving the platform towards AI-driven product decisions at scale, ensuring that product teams can make informed choices based on reliable and timely insights.
Key responsibilities include building the technical roadmap for AI-driven, self-serve product insights, collaborating closely with Product Management, Product Design, Data Science, and other teams to align the roadmap with team needs. The role also involves shaping the architecture and design of the experiments platform to accommodate Canva's growing scale, focusing on improving analysis pipeline reliability and latency. Additionally, the engineer will mentor and guide team members, set high standards for development practices, and drive cross-team initiatives to ensure cohesive system integration.
The ideal candidate has experience developing distributed web applications on the JVM, particularly with Java, and possesses deep knowledge of computer science fundamentals, including concurrency, data structures, and distributed systems. Proficiency in working within large distributed cloud environments, ideally AWS, and familiarity with cloud-native technologies such as Kubernetes and Terraform are advantageous. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential, as the role requires collaboration across engineering, Product Management, Product Design, and Data Science teams. Experience with large distributed data processing systems like Snowflake, strong SQL and data modeling skills, and a foundational understanding of statistical concepts relevant to experimentation are also beneficial.
