Senior Machine Learning Engineer - Agent Tools Interop (AU remote)
As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer on the Agent Tools Interop team at Canva, you will be at the forefront of agentic AI, focusing on developing systems that ensure reliable, safe, and scalable tool invocation across Canva's expanding ecosystem of agents. This role is integral to the Ecosystem Supergroup, which aims to create a rich app ecosystem that customizes Canva for over a billion users by empowering developers and partners to extend Canva's capabilities.
In this position, your primary responsibilities will include building and evolving systems that enable agents to discover, invoke, and safely execute capabilities at scale. You will design tool schemas and definition patterns to maximize large language model (LLM) tool selection accuracy and ensure reliable invocation across diverse agent consumers and AI integrations. Additionally, you will develop and operate evaluation pipelines to measure tool-calling behavior in production, identify regressions, and drive continuous quality improvement.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on production experience with LLM tool-use and function calling, including designing tool schemas and understanding how model behavior is influenced by tool definitions. Proficiency in Java is essential due to Canva's backend services infrastructure, with additional experience in Python or TypeScript being advantageous. Experience at the intersection of machine learning and platform engineering, particularly in making AI integrations production-grade, safe, and scalable, is highly valued. Familiarity with MCP, LangChain, LangGraph, or agent frameworks, as well as prompt engineering for tool definitions and tool-calling schemas, will set candidates apart.
