Senior Backend Engineer - Research Enablement

The Senior Backend Engineer - Research Enablement role at Canva involves bridging the gap between research and production within the AI research group. The team focuses on making experimental models production-ready by developing and maintaining infrastructure and tooling that facilitate faster iteration and reliable deployment of machine learning features.

Key responsibilities include collaborating closely with stakeholders and cross-functional teams to design, develop, and maintain high-performance, scalable backend components. The role also involves implementing best practices for backend engineering, participating in code reviews, and contributing to the overall architecture and design of backend systems to ensure maintainability and extensibility.

The ideal candidate should have a strong background in designing, building, and running large-scale Java or Python backend systems, along with firm grounding in computer science fundamentals such as concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, and the capacity to work collaboratively in a team environment are essential. Experience in machine learning is a significant plus.
