Principal Software Engineer, Robot Software

As a Principal Software Engineer in Robot Software at Wayve, you will play a pivotal role in advancing our Embodied AI platform, which powers autonomous vehicles. Collaborating closely with the Head of Robot Software within the Vehicle Software department, you will influence the technical roadmap and mentor emerging technical leaders. Your primary focus will be on ensuring the architectural integrity, scalability, and reliability of the software stacks that drive our vehicles.

Your key responsibilities will include defining a 12-24 month technical strategy, leading the design of complex, cross-functional systems, and setting high standards for code quality and testing rigor. You will act as a technical bridge between Robot Software and other departments, such as Hardware, Production Software, and Simulation, to ensure seamless integration and efficient data workflows. Additionally, you will provide mentorship to senior and staff engineers, fostering a culture of excellence and principled decision-making.

To excel in this role, you should have deep expertise in Robotics Middleware (e.g., ROS2, Cyber RT) and real-time systems, mastery of C++ (17/20) with a focus on memory management and concurrency, and proficiency in Python. A proven track record of shipping complex autonomous systems or safety-critical embedded software is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, especially in debugging complex hardware-software interactions, and exceptional leadership abilities are also required.
