As a Staff Machine Learning (ML) Engineer on Wayve's Gaia team, you will lead the development and training of large-scale video foundation models. Gaia serves as Wayve's video world model, predicting future frames from past context to generate synthetic scenarios, including rare or safety-critical events. This role offers the opportunity to drive significant advancements in autonomous driving technology within a dynamic and innovative environment.

Your primary responsibilities will include leading large-scale training runs for video foundation models, from experimental design to production-grade execution. You will contribute to model architecture and training strategies, focusing on first-principles understanding rather than relying on off-the-shelf applications. Additionally, you will enhance world-model capabilities to enable synthetic scenario generation and support downstream evaluation and training of driving models. Collaboration with research, applications, simulation engineering, and cloud/infrastructure teams will be essential to deliver end-to-end impact. Providing technical leadership through mentorship, code reviews, and setting high engineering and research standards will also be a key aspect of your role.

To be successful in this position, you should have in-depth experience training large-scale models, including language and video foundation models, with a strong understanding of model architecture. Hands-on engineering skills with modern ML stacks, such as PyTorch, are essential, along with a focus on debugging and performance/reliability-minded development. Relevant industry experience of 4–5+ years is typically expected, and advanced degrees are valued, though depth of applied experience is crucial.
