System Software Engineer - GCC/LLVM compiler, tooling, and ecosystem
Canonical is seeking a System Software Engineer to enhance the GCC and LLVM compiler ecosystems within Ubuntu. This role is part of the Ubuntu Foundations Team, which is responsible for delivering the core Ubuntu system that supports a wide range of products and services. The successful candidate will contribute to making Ubuntu the premier platform for developing and running C and C++ applications across various environments, including cloud, data centers, and containers.
The primary responsibilities include collaborating with a distributed team to select, integrate, and package top-tier tooling with Ubuntu to improve developer and operator experiences with GCC and LLVM. The engineer will write high-quality code to create new features, debug issues, and review code produced by other team members. Additionally, the role involves participating in design discussions and ensuring that architectural decisions enhance the overall performance and user experience of Ubuntu.
Candidates should possess relevant experience with GCC or LLVM, ideally within cloud-native software and Linux environments. Experience in packaging software for Debian and Ubuntu is essential, along with a strong academic background and a degree in a technical subject or a compelling alternative narrative. The role requires a passion for technology, strong interpersonal skills, and self-motivation. The ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events is also necessary.
