Staff Data Scientist - Discovery
The Staff Data Scientist role at Canva is situated within the Content & Discovery Supergroup, specifically in the Discovery Group. This team is dedicated to enhancing user experience by facilitating the discovery of over 100 million templates, photos, videos, and elements. As a senior individual contributor, the Staff Data Scientist will have end-to-end ownership of complex, high-impact problem spaces, shaping product strategy through data and elevating the standard of data science within the group.
Key responsibilities include driving cross-group strategic insights by synthesizing user behavior data to inform product direction. The role involves improving team practices, automating routine tasks, and developing self-serve tools to enhance efficiency. Additionally, the Staff Data Scientist will set the direction for data science within Discovery, foster cross-functional collaboration, design and lead experiments to test hypotheses, and develop goal metrics and dashboards to diagnose issues and guide business decisions.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of influencing business and product decisions through data, with experience in tackling ambiguous problems by gathering context and exploring data. Strong technical skills in data science are essential, including hypothesis-driven problem solving, SQL proficiency, numerical analysis, goal metric design, and data storytelling. Experience with experimentation, analytic event design, and data warehousing is also required. A background in mathematics or statistics and familiarity with search or recommendation-related datasets are desirable.
