The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is seeking a Senior Staff or Staff Attorney to join its Democracy: Education and Youth Advocacy and Litigation Impact Team (ALIT). This team focuses on strengthening and defending public education as a cornerstone of a multi-racial, inclusive democracy. The role involves advancing the human right of all young people to access fully funded, inclusive, high-quality public schools free from segregation, discrimination, punishment, and criminalization.

Key responsibilities include developing new cases in collaboration with SPLC staff and community partners, investigating and gathering information, and representing SPLC in various forums such as courts, community groups, and state agencies. The attorney will also collaborate with other ALITs and SPLC departments to advance the organization's impact goals and campaigns.

The ideal candidate will have at least one year of federal court civil litigation experience for Staff Attorney positions, and at least six years for Senior Staff Attorney positions. A J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school and membership in good standing of at least one state bar in the United States, preferably in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, or Florida, are required. Demonstrated experience in complex civil rights impact litigation and a commitment to community-oriented lawyering are essential.

The position offers a salary range based on legal experience post-law school, starting at $78,832 annually for Staff Attorney I (1-3 years out of law school) and up to $148,500 for Senior Staff Attorney IV (12+ years out of law school). The role provides flexible work options, including local remote and telework arrangements, and opportunities for professional development and mentoring within a supportive and inclusive organizational culture.
