The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is seeking a Senior Staff or Staff Attorney to join its Democracy: Voting Rights Litigation Team. This team collaborates with community partners across the Deep South to engage and mobilize voters, restore voting rights to returning citizens, pursue electoral policy reforms, and litigate against unconstitutional and discriminatory voting practices. The SPLC is a nonprofit legal advocacy organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society.

The attorney will litigate cases in state and federal courts, primarily across SPLC’s five focus states. Responsibilities include conducting extensive research and factual investigations, drafting motions and briefs, conducting discovery, and presenting oral arguments. The role also involves leading advocacy efforts, identifying and developing new litigation strategies to advance voting rights, and collaborating with community groups and coalitions.

Candidates must possess a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school and be a member in good standing of at least one state bar in the United States, preferably in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, or Washington, D.C. For Staff Attorney positions, at least one year of federal court civil litigation experience is required, while Senior Staff Attorney positions require at least six years of such experience. Experience litigating civil rights cases and working with community organizations to promote voting rights is essential.

The SPLC offers a competitive salary based on legal experience post-law school, with Staff Attorney I positions starting at $73,832 annually and Senior Staff Attorney IV positions reaching up to $148,500. Benefits include comprehensive health and dental insurance, generous paid time off, employer-sponsored retirement plans with matching contributions, flexible work arrangements, and professional development opportunities.

Joining the SPLC provides an opportunity to work within a mission-driven organization committed to civil rights and social justice. The organization fosters a collaborative and inclusive work environment, offering growth opportunities and the chance to make a significant impact in the fight for voting rights and against discrimination.
