Senior Optical Engineer - Integration
Muon Space is seeking a Senior Optical Engineer to join our team in Mountain View, CA, focusing on the production of infrared remote sensing instruments. This role offers the opportunity to engage in the full lifecycle of instrument development, with an initial emphasis on assembly, integration, and testing, and potential growth into optical design and analysis. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated engineer with a versatile skill set, comfortable working across various technical depths from individual components to system level.
Key responsibilities include planning and developing procedures for assembling and aligning complex optomechanical assemblies, defining alignment strategies, and managing system integration build flow. The role involves executing high-precision optical alignment and integration tasks, such as critical bonding operations, scan mirror calibration, and co-alignment of multiple imaging systems. Additionally, the engineer will support system-level verification and validation, radiometric calibration activities, and environmental testing, including vibration and thermal-vacuum tests.
The position requires a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in an engineering field, or equivalent experience, with at least 5 years of hands-on experience in integrating complex optomechanical systems in cleanroom environments. Proficiency with precision optical and mechanical metrology equipment, including interferometers, EO/IR collimators, and laser trackers, is essential. Experience in data analysis using Python, test report generation, and root cause analysis is also required. Excellent communication, presentation, and organizational skills are necessary, along with a readiness to work in a fast-paced environment with new challenges each week.
The salary range for this role is $184,000 to $223,000, complemented by a competitive equity grant and comprehensive benefits package. Final compensation will be based on skills, qualifications, experience, and geographic location as assessed during the interview process.
