Senior Counsel, U.S. Litigation Strategy
The Senior Counsel, U.S. Litigation Strategy at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is a pivotal role within the Global Censorship Team, based in Lansdowne, VA. This position focuses on advancing ADF's strategic objectives to combat corporate and state-sponsored censorship both domestically and globally. The role is tailored for a seasoned litigator who excels in identifying, developing, and refining legal theories and litigation strategies, rather than managing day-to-day casework. The Senior Counsel collaborates closely with senior leadership to ensure the effective deployment of promising legal opportunities.
Key responsibilities include serving as a strategic advisor to the Senior Vice President on litigation opportunities, risks, and priorities related to censorship. The role involves identifying and developing novel legal theories across various legal frameworks, assessing the viability of potential cases, and determining when litigation is the appropriate tool compared to legislative or regulatory approaches. Additionally, the Senior Counsel conducts complex legal research, develops litigation frameworks and case theories, and collaborates with internal and external litigators to ensure alignment with broader censorship objectives.
Candidates should possess a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree, an active license in at least one U.S. state bar, and the capability to meet admission requirements in the relevant jurisdiction within one year. A minimum of 10 years of litigation experience, including constitutional, regulatory, or complex civil litigation, is required. The role demands a deep understanding of legal analysis, strategic litigation development, and the ability to collaborate effectively with senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
While specific salary ranges are not disclosed, ADF offers a competitive compensation package comparable to top non-profit law firms. Benefits include 100% covered medical and dental insurance, medical and dependent care reimbursement, paid disability, long-term care, life insurance, and a 401(k) plan with a 4% company match. The organization emphasizes work-life balance with paid time off and 12 paid holidays each year.
ADF is dedicated to protecting religious freedom, free speech, the sanctity of life, marriage and family, and parental rights. The Senior Counsel role offers an opportunity to contribute to these mission-driven objectives within a collaborative and strategic environment. Candidates passionate about defending fundamental freedoms and engaging in high-level legal strategy are encouraged to apply.
