Legal Counsel, Public Policy

The Legal Counsel, Public Policy at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) plays a pivotal role in advancing the organization's mission to protect religious freedom, free speech, the sanctity of life, marriage and family, and parental rights. This position is integral to ADF's government affairs team, focusing on both federal and state legislative efforts. The role is based in Lansdowne, VA, and Dallas, TX.

In this capacity, the Legal Counsel will advocate for ADF's positions on governmental policies and legislation, with a primary emphasis on free speech and combating censorship from both domestic and foreign sources. Responsibilities include conducting research and analysis on relevant federal and state court precedents, drafting legislation and policy recommendations, and providing testimony on the legal implications of proposed or existing legislation. The role also involves extensive travel to engage with lawmakers, policy organizations, and other stakeholders to discuss policy strategy and legislative advocacy.

Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree, a Juris Doctor (J.D.), and be licensed to practice law. A minimum of 1-5 years of experience in public policy advocacy, governmental relations, or legislative work at the federal or state level is required. Strong research, analytical, and communication skills are essential, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with team members and external allies to advance shared legislative and policy goals.
