Canonical is seeking Junior Ubuntu Software Engineers to join its globally distributed team. As a leader in open-source software, Canonical develops and maintains Ubuntu, a widely used operating system in enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the development and enhancement of Ubuntu, collaborating with a diverse team of engineers worldwide.

In this position, you will be responsible for designing, building, and shipping software in languages such as Rust, Go, Python, and C/C++. Your day-to-day tasks will include packaging, integrating, testing, and uploading open-source software to the Ubuntu repositories. Additionally, you will debug issues, design and deliver robust solutions, author and improve technical and community documentation, and contribute to upstream and neighboring open-source projects. Collaboration with a globally distributed team and continuous learning to progress your technical and professional skills are key aspects of this role.

The ideal candidate will have an exceptional academic track record from both high school and university, with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a STEM field, or a compelling narrative about an alternative path. A passion for open-source software is essential, along with experience in Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, or C/C++. Professional written and spoken English, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to travel twice a year for company events are also required.

Canonical offers a distributed work environment with twice-yearly team sprints in person, a personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year, annual compensation reviews, recognition rewards, annual holiday leave, maternity and paternity leave, an Employee Assistance Programme, opportunities to travel to new locations to meet colleagues, and Priority Pass with travel upgrades for long-haul company events. This role provides a unique opportunity to engage with and contribute to the broader open-source community, fostering both personal and professional growth.
