Chief Scientist - Optics
STR is seeking a Chief Scientist to lead the development of innovative optical sensing solutions within the company's Sensors Division. This role involves providing strategic direction and technical oversight across a portfolio of sensing and counter-sensing programs, with a particular focus on optical sensing concepts, architectures, and systems. The Chief Scientist will collaborate with experts across various domains, including RF, biological, and acoustic sensing, to develop comprehensive strategies and research programs. Additionally, the position entails engaging with military and intelligence communities to develop new program concepts and proposals.
Key responsibilities include leading technical marketing efforts to engage existing and potential customers, developing technical proposals, and creating innovative solutions to complex sensing and counter-sensing challenges. The Chief Scientist will oversee teams in designing, developing, implementing, testing, and analyzing solutions to national security problems. Serving as the primary technical point of contact for specific customers and offices, the role also involves travel to various STR and customer locations.
Candidates should have over 15 years of relevant experience in sensor and signal processing technologies, with a background in electrical/computer engineering, computer science, aeronautical/aerospace engineering, mathematics, or physics. Experience with technical marketing and business development in defense and intelligence sectors, as well as a proven track record in technical proposal writing and winning bids, is essential. The role requires experience leading technical teams on advanced R&D programs, such as those with the Air Force, Navy, Army, DARPA, and Intelligence Community research projects. An active Top Secret security clearance is required, necessitating U.S. citizenship.
The full-time salary range for this position is $26,500,000 to $36,000,000 annually, based on external market data. Offers are determined by factors such as the candidate's experience, education, training, key skills, security clearances, and prevailing market and business conditions.
