Associate General Counsel - IP Strategy
AbbVie is seeking an Associate General Counsel to join its Intellectual Property, Transactions, and Innovation legal team, focusing on IP Strategy. This role involves developing and implementing intellectual property strategies for AbbVie's pharmaceutical products and candidates. The position is based in North Chicago, IL, South San Francisco, CA, or Waltham, MA, with a hybrid work model requiring on-site presence three or more days per week.
The Associate General Counsel will generate and implement intellectual property strategies across various therapeutic areas and technologies, including both large and small molecules. Responsibilities include partnering with IP Prosecution to draft, file, and prosecute patent applications worldwide, working directly with scientists to create novel intellectual property, providing legal advice to cross-functional R&D and business teams on IP-related matters, and managing post-grant proceedings such as IPRs and oppositions.
Candidates must possess a JD degree from an accredited law school, be admitted to a state bar, and be registered to practice before the USPTO. A minimum of seven years of experience in patent law, including substantial U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, is required. A technical background relevant to pharmaceutical patent prosecution, such as experience in small molecule or biological pharmaceutical discovery and development, or a degree in molecular biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or biomedical engineering, is essential. Strong legal, analytical, communication, collaboration, and project management skills are also necessary.
