Associate General Counsel, Patent Prosecution - India
AbbVie is seeking an experienced Associate General Counsel to join its Patent Prosecution group within the Intellectual Property, Transactions, and Innovation legal team. This role focuses on supporting AbbVie's pharmaceutical products, with a particular emphasis on protecting the Indian market. The position is based in North Chicago, IL, Waltham, MA, South San Francisco, CA, or Irvine, CA, offering a hybrid work model with on-site presence required three or more days per week.
In this role, the Associate General Counsel will provide legal advice and counsel to cross-functional R&D and business teams on various IP-related matters, serving as a subject matter expert on patent strategy in India. Responsibilities include developing and implementing intellectual property strategies to maximize AbbVie's competitive position, drafting, filing, and prosecuting patent applications worldwide both directly and through management of outside counsel, and challenging and defending patents in IPR, opposition, interference, and other post-grant proceedings, including implementing strategies to expedite resolution of Indian proceedings. Additionally, the role involves conducting prior art searches, analyzing third-party patent positions, and performing due diligence to support business development activities.
Candidates should possess a JD degree from an accredited law school, state bar admission enabling in-house practice (specific state not required), and registration to practice before the USPTO. A minimum of 8 years of experience practicing patent law as an attorney or patent agent at a law firm and/or life sciences company is required, including substantial experience obtaining and defending Indian patents. A technical background relevant for pharmaceutical patent prosecution is essential, such as experience with small molecule and/or biological pharmaceutical discovery and development, and/or a technical degree in a relevant field like molecular biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or biomedical engineering. Strong legal, analytical, communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills are necessary, along with a demonstrated ability to manage complex projects to meet deadlines.
The compensation range for this position is between $182,000 and $346,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
