Trust & Safety Counsel
Discord is seeking a Trust & Safety Counsel to join its expanding legal team. This pivotal role involves providing legal guidance to the Trust & Safety organization, focusing on law enforcement data requests, content moderation, and compliance with global regulations. As the second Trust & Safety counsel, the individual will support efforts to maintain a safe and secure environment for Discord's diverse user base.
The Trust & Safety Counsel will be responsible for offering legal advice to the Law Enforcement Engagement and Response (LEER) team regarding user data and content takedown requests from governmental entities. Engaging with law enforcement agencies, managing responses to third-party civil and criminal defense subpoenas, and developing resources for Trust & Safety teams are key aspects of the role. Additionally, the counsel will proactively identify compliance gaps and collaborate on policy and product enhancements to address them.
Candidates should possess a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and be admitted to the bar of a relevant jurisdiction. A minimum of seven years of experience as a prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice or in an in-house tech legal department, particularly supporting law enforcement operations, is required. Strong knowledge of laws related to user data disclosure, such as the Stored Communications Act and the CLOUD Act, is essential. Excellent communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects under pressure are also necessary.
The compensation package includes a base salary ranging from $248,000 to $279,000, along with equity and benefits. Salary determination considers factors like job-related skills, experience, and education. This full-time position is based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
