Tax Accountant
Clifford Chance US LLP is seeking a full-time U.S. Tax Accountant to join their dynamic tax team in New York. This role is integral to the U.S. Tax Group, focusing on federal, state, and other income tax compliance filings, and supporting the UK entity with U.S. tax reporting and compliance requirements. The position offers opportunities to contribute to broader tax strategy and planning initiatives across the region.
Key responsibilities include evaluating U.S. and UK tax implications related to work-from-home arrangements and partner/employee relocations to states without a taxable presence. The role also involves advising on establishing a physical or taxable presence in new U.S. states, analyzing financial data to assess multistate tax exposure, preparing and maintaining detailed state tax workpapers, managing state-level tax processes, reviewing vendor-submitted IRS Forms W-8, supporting the UK office with U.S. tax reporting requirements, monitoring vendor payments for potential U.S. sales and use tax obligations, serving as a key point of contact for external tax preparers, and conducting in-depth research on state and local tax regulations.
Candidates should have over four years of tax experience with a strong focus on state tax compliance within a law or professional services firm. A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is required; a master's in taxation is a plus. Certifications such as CPA, EA, or equivalent are preferred. A strong understanding of state tax laws, multistate taxation, and tax nexus considerations is essential. The role requires the ability to analyze complex tax issues, interpret legislation, and provide clear recommendations, along with high accuracy in tax calculations, compliance filings, and financial reporting. Proficiency in tax software and financial reporting systems (e.g., OneSource, CCH, SAP) is necessary. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States and adhere to the firm's Agile Working Policy, which requires working from the office two or three days each calendar week.
The salary range for this role is $105,000 to $140,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications and relevant experience.
