Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, or Senior Counsel [Term-Limited]

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is seeking a Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, or Senior Counsel to join its Ruth Bader Ginsburg Center for Liberty. This full-time, term-limited position is based in New York, NY, or Washington, D.C., with a hybrid work arrangement requiring in-office presence two days per week or eight days per month. The Center for Liberty focuses on legal work related to reproductive freedom, LGBTQ rights and HIV, women's rights, freedom of religion and belief, and disability rights.

The attorney will collaborate closely with the Deputy Legal Director/Director of the Center for Liberty to advance the Center's initiatives. Key responsibilities include litigating in federal and state courts on issues pertinent to the Center's mission, developing relationships with advocates, lawyers, academics, and potential clients, and working with ACLU state affiliates. The role also involves serving as a resource for legislative, policy, and campaign work, engaging in public speaking, and collaborating with staff across the organization.

Candidates must possess a J.D. degree and have litigation experience, including clerkships. Excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills are essential, along with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. A commitment to mentoring interns and a willingness to travel are also required. Admission to the bar of the state in which the candidate will work is necessary, or there must be a willingness to promptly seek such membership.

The ACLU offers a competitive salary based on years since law school graduation, ranging from $96,069 to $219,104.
