Deputy Legal Director/ Director of the Trone Center for Justice and Equality
The Deputy Legal Director/Director of the Trone Center for Justice and Equality leads the ACLU's efforts in addressing issues related to crime, punishment, and racial justice. This role involves overseeing six key projects: the Abortion Criminal Defense Initiative, Capital Punishment Project, Criminal Law Reform Project, National Prison Project, Racial Justice Program, and the John Adams Project. The position is based in New York, NY; San Francisco, CA; or Washington, DC, with a hybrid work arrangement requiring two in-office days per week.
Key responsibilities include supervising project directors, providing strategic guidance on litigation, and overseeing the development and implementation of strategic plans and budgets. The Director also serves as a spokesperson on issues within the Center's purview and ensures coordination with other ACLU departments and affiliates.
Candidates must possess a J.D. degree with significant impact litigation experience in civil rights and civil liberties. Strong management skills in a public interest law setting are essential, with a preference for experience in a federated nonprofit organization. Subject-matter expertise in racial justice, criminal law reform, capital punishment, and conditions of detention and incarceration is strongly preferred.
