Sr. Software Engineer, Personal Loans Engineering
Upstart is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Personal Loans Engineering team, a pivotal group responsible for managing the applicant journey through the loan application and verification process. This team plays a critical role in Upstart's flagship product, focusing on maximizing loan originations while upholding trust, risk integrity, and compliance.
In this role, you will own and enhance key steps in the loan funnel to increase funded-loan conversion and reduce applicant drop-off. Responsibilities include designing and implementing service boundaries and APIs to decouple tightly coupled systems, enabling faster iteration and cross-product reuse. Collaboration with Growth, Verifications Platform, Pricing/Decisioning/Risk, Lending Partners, and downstream teams is essential to deliver end-to-end applicant outcomes. Additionally, you will lead complex changes that improve the user journey while maintaining business continuity and compliance, and identify opportunities for intelligent automation to reduce friction and accelerate time-to-fund.
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree and over 7 years of professional software development experience building scalable public or consumer-facing web and/or mobile products, or 10+ years of relevant experience. Demonstrated experience in decomposing or modernizing tightly coupled systems into modular components/services with clear interfaces is required. Proficiency in experiment-driven development, including instrumentation, A/B testing, and analysis, is essential. Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary to explain complex technical topics to non-technical stakeholders. A track record of successfully mentoring and developing other engineers is also important.
Upstart offers a competitive compensation package, including base pay, bonus opportunities, and annual equity grants that vest quarterly. The anticipated base salary for this position ranges from $166,900 to $239,000, depending on geographic location and individual qualifications. Additional benefits include a generous 401(k) plan with company matching, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, paid time off, and family-centered benefits.
Joining Upstart means becoming part of a mission-driven company dedicated to reducing the cost and complexity of borrowing for all Americans. The company fosters a digital-first environment, offering flexibility to work from various locations while emphasizing intentional in-person connections through team onsites and planning sessions. Upstart values creativity, experimentation, and advanced AI to reshape access to credit, providing opportunities for professional growth and meaningful impact.
