Assistant General Counsel, Commercial

Upstart is seeking an Assistant General Counsel, Commercial, to lead a team of commercial attorneys responsible for negotiating and drafting a wide range of third-party contracts, excluding those with financiers or investors. This role involves supporting Upstart's lending partnerships sales team and managing all commercial contracts across the organization.

Key responsibilities include overseeing the legal aspects of lending partnership agreements, structuring and negotiating commercial contracts for various third-party engagements, and providing strategic legal guidance to internal stakeholders. The role also entails balancing individual contributor tasks with people management duties.

Candidates must have a minimum of 10 years of experience in commercial transactions, including representing in-house sales teams, and prior experience in both law firm and in-house settings. Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills, expertise in contract law, and experience managing legal professionals are essential. Preferred qualifications include banking or fintech legal experience, familiarity with data privacy issues, and admission to the CA or NY Bar.
