Sr. Observability Systems Engineer
Backblaze is seeking a Senior Observability Systems Engineer to lead the development and implementation of observability solutions across its data centers. This role involves setting technical direction, mentoring team members, and ensuring the scalability and reliability of Backblaze's infrastructure monitoring systems. The position is remote within the United States.
In this role, you will be responsible for defining and maintaining observability standards, including instrumentation conventions, alerting philosophies, and dashboard design patterns. You will mentor engineers on the Observability team and collaborate with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Storage Engineering, and Network Engineering teams to enhance observability practices. Additionally, you will lead design reviews, evaluate observability and AIOps tooling, and produce comprehensive documentation to ensure the platform's operability and extensibility.
The ideal candidate will have over eight years of experience in systems engineering, SRE, DevOps, or observability-focused roles, with a proven track record in technical leadership. Expertise in Prometheus, VictoriaMetrics, or similar metrics platforms, along with experience in log aggregation pipelines and distributed tracing, is essential. Proficiency in Python and/or Go for automation, familiarity with Kubernetes, and a strong understanding of Linux internals are also required. Experience in mentoring engineers and excellent communication skills are crucial for success in this role.
