Canva is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join its Product and Privacy team, focusing on supporting product and engineering teams in the development and evolution of Canva's AI products. This role requires a solid foundation in global laws related to privacy, intellectual property, AI, online safety, marketing, accessibility, platform, and consumer laws. The position is based in Melbourne, Australia, with a hybrid work model that offers flexibility for remote work and in-person collaboration.

In this role, the Senior Legal Counsel will identify and advise on legal issues in key areas, including privacy, data protection, intellectual property, marketing, online safety, AI regulation, platform, competition, and consumer laws. They will build strong relationships with key stakeholders, advising on product development, go-to-market strategy, partnership terms, consumer-facing terms, and risk mitigation. Additionally, the role involves contributing to the development and operationalization of company-wide AI policies, drafting and maintaining legal playbooks, collaborating closely with privacy, IP, security, product, and engineering teams, and participating in the review and coordination of potential privacy or data security incidents.

The ideal candidate will be legally qualified with a practicing certificate from Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the EU, or the US, and have over 10 years of experience practicing law, including some in-house experience, preferably in a technology company. They should be familiar with key global digital, AI, privacy, consumer, and online safety laws and regulations, such as the EU AI Act, GDPR, ePrivacy Directive, Digital Services Act, and Online Safety Act(s). A deep understanding of modern AI technology and products is essential, along with the ability to collaborate with team members across different time zones. The candidate should be a collaborative, pragmatic, business-minded lawyer who can simplify compliance without compromising standards and thrive in fast-moving environments.
