Senior Backend Engineer - Databases Tempo | US | Remote

Grafana Labs is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Tempo team, responsible for developing and maintaining the distributed tracing backend that powers Grafana Cloud Traces and Grafana Enterprise Traces. This role offers the opportunity to work on a critical component of Grafana's observability platform, contributing to its evolution and operational excellence.

In this position, you will lead complex, multi-month technical projects, including trace aggregation APIs, autoscaling, customer limits, and query engine improvements. You will own components of Tempo spanning ingestion, storage, querying, and metrics generation, ensuring high performance, scalability, and reliability. Collaboration with product managers and cross-functional teams is essential to align technical solutions with product goals.

Ideal candidates will have significant experience building and operating distributed data systems in production, with strong skills in Go or other systems languages such as Rust, C, or C++. A proven track record of delivering complex projects from design through implementation and operations is required. Experience with tracing, OpenTelemetry, or large-scale observability systems is advantageous.

The compensation for this role ranges from $154,445 to $185,334 annually, with additional benefits including Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), a company-funded budget for AI coding assistant usage, and a remote-first work environment.
