Paralegal, Women's Rights Project & Abortion Criminal Defense Initiative
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is seeking a full-time Paralegal to support both the Abortion Criminal Defense Initiative (ACDI) and the Women's Rights Project (WRP) at its National office in New York, NY. This hybrid role requires in-office presence two days per week or eight days per month. The ACDI addresses the criminalization of abortion care following the Supreme Court's reversal of Roe v. Wade, while the WRP, founded by Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 1972, focuses on systemic legal reform to ensure gender equity under the law.
The Paralegal will be responsible for producing and filing briefs, motions, and other pleadings in state courts nationwide, including cite-checking, copy-editing, and building tables. Additional duties include tracking key litigation and legal developments, supporting attorneys in managing relationships with stakeholders and clients, assisting in the design and execution of ACDI network attorney trainings, and collaborating with the communications department on developing assets. Administrative tasks such as calendar management, expense tracking, and coordination of travel are also part of the role.
Candidates must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and possess strong interpersonal and time management skills. Excellent research, writing, and communication abilities are essential. The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team, while maintaining a high level of efficiency and professionalism, is required. Preferred qualifications include a bachelor's degree or one to two years of paralegal experience, basic knowledge of the Bluebook, and familiarity with Westlaw Next.
