Lawyer, Pro Bono
Gilbert + Tobin is seeking a dedicated lawyer to join its Pro Bono team on a 12-month full-time, fixed-term contract. The firm, established in 1988, has grown to over 500 lawyers and is recognized for its commitment to excellence, trust, and integrity. The Pro Bono team focuses on assisting individuals and organizations to realize their fundamental rights and freedoms, with a particular emphasis on supporting First Nations peoples and communities.
In this role, you will engage in a diverse range of access to justice matters, including litigation across multiple jurisdictions and non-litigious work such as governance for not-for-profit organizations, law reform, and community legal education. The position is based in the Sydney office, with flexibility to work from home up to two days per week, depending on team needs. Regular in-office days are Tuesday and Thursday.
The ideal candidate will have two to five years of post-qualification experience in legal practice, with a demonstrated capacity to undertake access to justice work, including litigation and support for not-for-profit organizations. Strong analytical, communication, and drafting skills are essential, along with the ability to manage a high caseload across multiple areas of law. Experience working effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds and the ability to build relationships that inform clients' legal needs are also important. Willingness to travel interstate and to regional, rural, and remote areas as required is necessary.
Gilbert + Tobin offers a friendly, flexible, and professional working environment. In addition to top-of-market remuneration, benefits include a subsidized café, gym membership, end-of-trip facilities, exclusive retail discounts, and social events.
This position provides an opportunity to work in one of Australia's leading pro bono teams on a broad range of matters, offering hands-on experience with high-quality and interesting cases, and the chance to help shape the firm's work with First Nations communities.
