Coinbase is seeking a Counsel, Commercial to join its Business Legal team, focusing on leading the legal strategy for the company's key payments partnerships. This role is integral to facilitating connections between Coinbase and various financial entities, including banks, payment networks, fintech companies, and other strategic partners. As a remote-first company, Coinbase emphasizes in-person collaboration through quarterly working sessions known as "surges."
In this position, the Counsel, Commercial will be responsible for drafting, negotiating, and executing customized commercial agreements with strategic partners and sophisticated counterparties in the payments and fintech sectors. The role involves developing innovative agreement frameworks and providing practical, business-oriented legal advice that balances risk with the need for speed and flexibility. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including Business Development, Sales, Product, Engineering, Finance/Tax, and Compliance, is essential to solve complex problems, build partnerships, and expedite deal closures.
Candidates should possess a Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent legal qualification, with at least four years of relevant transactional experience at a leading law firm or comparable in-house practice. A strong interest in digital currency and blockchain technology is preferred. Experience in structuring complex transactions and negotiating and drafting commercial agreements with strategic partners in the technology, payments, and/or finance sectors is essential. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent judgment, analytical rigor, clear communication, and business pragmatism.
