Ubuntu Engineering Lead
The Ubuntu Engineering Lead at Canonical is a pivotal role responsible for guiding and managing engineering teams within the Ubuntu Engineering organization. This position involves overseeing the development and integration of open-source software, ensuring robust upgrade paths, and shaping the future of Ubuntu, the world's most widely deployed open-source operating system. The role is integral to Canonical's mission of delivering high-quality, performant, and resilient software solutions to a global user base.
Key responsibilities include leading teams to enhance the Linux developer and user experience, designing and shipping high-quality software in languages such as Rust, Go, and Python, and demonstrating sound engineering principles through architecture and code reviews. The lead is also tasked with planning, estimation, and execution of projects, defining the vision and strategy for Ubuntu in collaboration with product management, and setting expectations with other engineering teams and stakeholders. Additionally, the role involves coaching and mentoring team members, contributing to upstream open-source projects, optimizing the distribution for performance and security, and authoring technical documentation.
Candidates should possess an exceptional academic track record, with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a related STEM field, or an equivalent alternative path. The role requires the ability to drive and deliver technical workstreams beyond expectations, lead and coach others to achieve exceptional engineering outcomes, and a demonstrated passion for open-source software. Significant experience with programming languages such as Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, or C/C++ is essential. Professional proficiency in written and spoken English, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a result-oriented mindset with a personal drive to meet commitments are also required. The ability to travel twice a year for company events of up to two weeks each is necessary.
