Trial Unit Paralegal
The Federal Public Defender's Office for the Central District of California is seeking a full-time Trial Unit Paralegal to join their Los Angeles main office. This role is integral to the organization's mission of providing high-quality criminal defense to individuals charged with federal crimes who cannot afford legal representation.
The Trial Unit Paralegal will support attorneys across various federal cases, including pre-indictment matters, trials, appeals, and habeas proceedings. Responsibilities encompass assisting in case preparation for trials and hearings, reviewing and organizing complex discovery materials, creating and maintaining case-related documents such as indices and witness lists, and collaborating with defense teams to develop case strategies. Additionally, the paralegal will assist attorneys and clients with bail processes and attend meetings with clients both in and out of custody.
Candidates must possess an undergraduate degree and have at least five years of experience as a litigation paralegal, with a focus on trial preparation and support. An advanced technology background is essential, as the role requires proficiency with database programs for managing electronically stored information, digital presentation tools for courtroom use, forensic tools for data extraction, and Office 365 applications. While a paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program is preferred, it is not mandatory. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in state or federal criminal defense.
This full-time, at-will position offers a salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits include health and life insurance, retirement plans, and a Thrift Savings Plan. After successfully completing a probationary period, eligible employees may opt to telework up to two days per week, subject to certain conditions.
