Canonical is seeking a Software Engineer for its Sustaining Engineering team, focusing on Linux-based software-defined infrastructure and applications. This role involves working across various layers of the technology stack, including bare metal, virtualization, containerization, storage, networking, and platforms like OpenStack and Kubernetes. The position is fully remote, with teams distributed globally.

The primary responsibilities include resolving complex customer issues related to Ubuntu, the Linux kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and other open-source software. The engineer will collaborate closely with Canonical's Field, Support, and Product Engineering teams, participate in upstream communities, develop and backport patches, and review code from other engineers. Effective time management and clear technical communication are essential, along with occasional international travel for team meetings and conferences.

Candidates should have professional experience as a software engineer, a background in Computer Science or a related STEM field, and strong experience with Linux. Proficiency in at least one of the following cloud technologies is required: Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, or similar. Development-level experience with Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux is necessary, along with the ability to troubleshoot using debugging tools like gdb and familiarity with git repositories. An exceptional academic track record and willingness to travel up to four times a year for internal events are also expected.

Canonical offers a distributed work environment with twice-yearly in-person team sprints, a personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year, annual compensation reviews, recognition rewards, annual holiday leave, maternity and paternity leave, an Employee Assistance Programme, opportunities to travel to new locations to meet colleagues, and travel upgrades for long-haul company events.

As a pioneer in open-source software, Canonical provides a unique opportunity to work on Ubuntu, a leading open-source project and platform for AI, IoT, and the cloud. The company fosters a remote-first culture, emphasizing collaboration, innovation, and professional growth.
