Senior Site Reliability Engineer
The Senior Site Reliability Engineer at MZLA Technologies Corporation, the nonprofit-owned company behind Thunderbird, is responsible for establishing and maintaining the infrastructure and operational systems that support Thunderbird's open-source email applications. This role involves designing and developing CI/CD systems for MZLA websites, services, and release workflows, as well as diagnosing and debugging production incidents to enhance system reliability. The position requires consistent overlap with Pacific Time zone working hours to enable effective collaboration.
Key responsibilities include operating and evolving an EKS-based Kubernetes platform, supporting service migrations, platform improvements, and reliability initiatives. The engineer will also write and maintain infrastructure in Pulumi and/or Terraform/OpenTofu across multiple AWS accounts, and operate and evolve the observability stack, partnering with engineering teams to incorporate instrumentation and monitoring into service design. Additionally, the role involves applying security-conscious infrastructure practices, diagnosing and debugging production incidents, and participating in on-call rotation.
Candidates should have over 7 years of experience in infrastructure, platform engineering, or site reliability roles, including hands-on production Kubernetes experience in workload operations, troubleshooting, and cluster management. Experience with infrastructure-as-code on AWS using Terraform, OpenTofu, or Pulumi is required, along with security awareness in day-to-day infrastructure work. Excellent asynchronous written communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with software engineers and non-engineering stakeholders are essential.
Compensation for this role varies by location:
- US: $123,000 - $144,000 USD
- Canada: $108,000 - $125,000 CAD
- UK: £62,000 - £72,000 GBP
In addition to competitive salaries, MZLA offers a comprehensive benefits package, including fully remote work, annual bonus programs, monthly remote work stipends, annual professional development stipends, and industry conferences. Employees also receive 24 days of paid time off per year, paid parental leave, health, dental, and vision insurance, and other benefits.
MZLA fosters a collaborative and inclusive culture, emphasizing transparency and a shared commitment to building technology that prioritizes user privacy and control over data. As Thunderbird evolves beyond a single desktop application, the company is expanding across desktop, mobile, and paid services to build independent, privacy-respecting alternatives to big tech ecosystems. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to open-source software used by millions who choose privacy and ownership over convenience.
