Senior Counsel, Privacy and Compliance
Recursion is seeking a Senior Counsel specializing in privacy and compliance to support the expansion of its clinical trials and compliance infrastructure. This role offers the opportunity to develop and maintain a privacy-by-design framework through vendor onboarding, data mapping, policy development, and negotiation of privacy terms in transactions. The position also involves enhancing the compliance function within the Legal department by providing tailored guidance, implementation, and training, while collaborating closely with various functions across the company.
Key responsibilities include developing and maintaining infrastructure to comply with international data privacy regulations, reviewing and negotiating data protection terms in agreements, monitoring and advising on privacy and compliance developments, supporting incident response and data subject rights requests, overseeing vendor onboarding for those processing personal data, maintaining the company's Record of Processing Activity, conducting privacy-by-design reviews, and drafting policies and training materials to support data protection compliance. Additionally, the role involves assisting in drafting and implementing corporate compliance policies, partnering with Human Resources to identify policy needs, and collaborating with internal stakeholders to create a compliance function that enables business growth while mitigating risk.
The ideal candidate will have at least four years of experience in data privacy counseling within the biotech or pharmaceutical industry, either at a law firm or in-house. A strong working knowledge of privacy and data protection laws, including U.S. state privacy laws, GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and related regulatory frameworks, is essential. Experience in reviewing and negotiating privacy, security, and data protection provisions in commercial agreements is required. The candidate should possess the ability to provide clear, practical advice in a fast-paced business environment, demonstrate strong judgment and attention to detail, and manage multiple projects independently. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary. Privacy certifications such as IAPP/US, CIPP/E, or CIPM are preferred, as is experience in building or scaling privacy and compliance programs in-house. Admission to practice law in at least one state and eligibility to practice in Utah as in-house counsel are required.
The position is based in Salt Lake City, Utah, with consideration for remote work. Remote employees are expected to commit to regular on-site visits for routine work and departmental events. The estimated annual base salary range for this role is $229,000 to $281,600, with eligibility for an annual bonus and equity compensation, as well as a comprehensive benefits package.
