Senior Attorney - Code & Public Nuisance Litigation Unit
The City of Philadelphia's Law Department is seeking a Senior Attorney to join the Code & Public Nuisance Litigation Unit. This unit is responsible for enforcing the Philadelphia Code by initiating affirmative litigation against property owners and businesses whose actions compromise public health, safety, and welfare. The role involves collaboration with various city departments, including the Department of Licenses and Inspections and the Department of Public Health, to ensure compliance with municipal regulations.
The Senior Attorney will manage a high-volume caseload, handling cases in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and Municipal Court, as well as statutory appeals before boards such as the Board of Licenses and Inspection Review. Responsibilities include conducting legal research, drafting and filing pleadings, preparing witnesses for hearings, and negotiating settlements. Additionally, the attorney will provide legal counsel to city departments and may lead special projects or committees as assigned.
Candidates must possess a law degree from an ABA-accredited institution and be a member in good standing of the Pennsylvania Bar or eligible for admission by reciprocity. A minimum of nine years of relevant legal experience is required, with a strong background in state court litigation and familiarity with the Pennsylvania Rules of Civil Procedure. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent research and writing skills, the ability to manage a substantial workload independently, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The position offers a competitive salary range of $118,325 to $143,237, commensurate with education and experience.
