Senior Attorney, Beyond Guilt Project Director - Part Time
The Ohio Justice & Policy Center (OJPC) is seeking a Senior Attorney to lead its Beyond Guilt Project in Cleveland, Ohio. This part-time role (approximately 20-30 hours per week) involves overseeing post-conviction legal advocacy, focusing on identifying and securing the release of individuals serving excessive or unjust sentences. The position offers flexibility and the opportunity to contribute significantly to criminal justice reform.
The Senior Attorney will manage a docket of approximately 20–30 client matters annually, coordinating efforts across attorneys, paralegals, pro bono counsel, interns, and volunteers. Responsibilities include litigating 6-12 post-conviction cases each year, such as judicial release motions, parole advocacy, sentence modifications, plea withdrawals, motions for new trials, and post-conviction petitions. The role also involves overseeing case intake, prioritization, and assignment, balancing staff capacity with strategic impact and sustainability.
Candidates must possess a Juris Doctor or advanced law degree and be admitted to the Ohio Bar (or eligible under Ohio Supreme Court rules). A minimum of five years of litigation experience is required, along with strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills. Experience supervising legal teams or managing complex legal projects is essential. A demonstrated commitment to social justice and criminal legal system reform is highly valued. Preferred qualifications include significant post-conviction litigation experience, particularly in judicial release, resentencing, or parole matters, as well as strong project management and team leadership skills.
