Senior Associate General Counsel (Franchise Brands)
The Senior Associate General Counsel (Franchise Brands) at Compass is a pivotal role within the Franchise Brands Legal Department, overseeing legal matters for various franchised brands, including Better Homes and Garden® Real Estate, CENTURY 21®, Coldwell Banker®, Corcoran®, Christie’s International Real Estate, ERA®, Sotheby’s International Realty®, and @properties®. This position is fully onsite, based out of Compass's offices in New York City, Madison (NJ), Los Angeles, or San Francisco.
In this role, the Senior Associate General Counsel is responsible for drafting and negotiating franchise agreements and related documents to support the company's growth and retention objectives. The position also involves negotiating vendor contracts, particularly those related to SaaS and Information Technology, reviewing marketing materials for legal compliance, and providing expert legal advice on laws, rules, and regulations affecting the business. Additionally, the role includes guiding business clients on achieving success while minimizing risk, partnering with the business on key initiatives, proactively identifying potential issues, and contributing to continuous process improvement.
Candidates should possess a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and have a minimum of 7-10 years of legal experience, with a strong emphasis on franchise law. Some in-house legal experience is preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently and interact effectively with all staff and management levels, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a consultative approach to supporting business objectives while mitigating risk are essential. A high degree of integrity, respect, and dedication to the company's values, along with a positive, “can do” demeanor, are also important.
The expected base pay for this position ranges from $190,000 to $250,000 annually. This range reflects Compass's good-faith estimate of the compensation for this role at the time of posting. Final offers within this range will depend on job-related factors such as experience, skills, and internal equity. Additional compensation elements, such as bonuses, commissions, or equity grants, may be available, along with a comprehensive benefits program.
