Thinking Machines Lab is seeking a Researcher with expertise in visual perception and multimodal learning to join our team in San Francisco. Our mission is to empower humanity by advancing collaborative general intelligence, and we are dedicated to building AI systems that seamlessly integrate into real-world environments.
In this role, you will lead research projects focused on training and performance analysis of multimodal AI models. Your responsibilities will include curating and building large-scale datasets, developing evaluation benchmarks to enhance vision capabilities, and collaborating with data infrastructure engineers, pretraining researchers, and the product team to create cutting-edge multimodal models and their applications. Additionally, you will publish and present research findings, sharing code, datasets, and insights to accelerate progress across the industry and academia.
The ideal candidate will possess the ability to design, run, and analyze experiments with demonstrated research judgment and empirical rigor. A strong understanding of machine learning fundamentals, large-scale training, and distributed computing environments is essential. Proficiency in Python and familiarity with at least one deep learning framework, such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX, are required. A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Physics, Mathematics, or a related discipline with strong theoretical and empirical grounding is necessary. Clear communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts in writing are also important.
Preferred qualifications include research or engineering contributions in visual reasoning, spatial understanding, or multimodal architecture design. Experience developing evaluation frameworks for multimodal tasks, publications or open-source contributions in vision-language modeling, video understanding, or multimodal AI, and a strong grasp of probability, statistics, and machine learning fundamentals are advantageous. A PhD in a relevant field or equivalent industry research experience is also desirable.
We offer a competitive annual salary ranging from $350,000 to $475,000, depending on background, skills, and experience.
