The Research Legal Counsel at University Health Network (UHN) plays a pivotal role in supporting the organization's diverse research initiatives. Reporting to the Director of Research Legal, this position is integral to UHN's mission of advancing healthcare through research and innovation. UHN, Canada's leading research hospital, encompasses multiple sites and a vast team dedicated to excellence in patient care, research, and education.

Key responsibilities include negotiating, drafting, and finalizing a variety of research support agreements, such as license agreements, option agreements, joint venture agreements, and data transfer agreements. The role also involves developing and maintaining legal agreement templates and guidelines to streamline processes, managing legal and reputational risks associated with research and commercial agreements, and providing legal oversight on research grants and compliance. Additionally, the counsel will coordinate cross-functional legal compliance across UHN and stay abreast of legal and regulatory developments affecting the organization's research and commercialization activities.

Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field and a Bachelor’s degree in Law (or recognized equivalent). A minimum of five years of practical legal experience is required, along with membership in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in contract law, intellectual property law, and regulatory compliance, preferably within the healthcare or research sector. Experience in negotiating and drafting research agreements and commercial contracts in academic or life sciences settings is essential, as is knowledge of Canadian and international IP laws and regulatory frameworks such as PHIPA and GDPR.

UHN offers a competitive salary range of $115,730 to $165,730 annually, along with comprehensive benefits packages.
