Anthropic, a leading AI safety and research company, is seeking a Research Counsel to join its Research Legal team. This role is integral to ensuring that Anthropic's AI models are developed and deployed responsibly, aligning with the company's mission to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The position is available in San Francisco, CA, and New York City, NY.

As a Research Counsel, you will provide legal guidance throughout the entire lifecycle of frontier AI models. Your responsibilities will include advising research and data teams on data sourcing, licensing, partnerships, and usage, as well as shaping Anthropic's data acquisition and use strategy in response to evolving laws and market dynamics. You will coordinate regulatory readiness and model launches, review model documentation and system cards, respond to regulatory inquiries, and address legal questions for pre-release and internal models. Additionally, you will support the Responsible Scaling Policy concerning biological and chemical risks, including capability evaluations, tiered access for biosecurity researchers, and dual-use research considerations. Your role will also involve counseling various teams on research design, data collection and sharing, external collaborations, program launches, and publication reviews.

To qualify for this position, candidates must hold a law degree (JD, LLB, or equivalent) and meet the local licensing requirements to work as in-house counsel in California or New York. A minimum of eight years of legal experience advising technology companies on copyright, privacy, data, AI regulation, and related product and policy issues is required. Ideal candidates will have experience engaging directly with regulators or standards bodies, possess working technical literacy to understand model training, evaluation, and deployment, and have familiarity with biosecurity, dual-use research, export controls, or safety frameworks such as Anthropic's Responsible Scaling Policy. An academic or publishing background, or experience with copyright, open-source, and data licensing, is also preferred.

Anthropic offers a competitive salary range of $265,000 to $335,000 per year for this role. While specific benefits and perks are not detailed in the available information, Anthropic is known for its commitment to employee well-being and professional growth. The company fosters a collaborative and mission-driven environment, encouraging team members to contribute to the responsible development of AI technologies.

Joining Anthropic as a Research Counsel provides an opportunity to be at the forefront of AI development, addressing complex legal challenges in a rapidly evolving field. The role offers a chance to work alongside a diverse team of experts dedicated to ensuring that AI technologies are developed and deployed in ways that are beneficial and safe for society.
