Principal Software Engineer, ML Flywheel Technical Lead

Waymo is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the development of its machine learning (ML) flywheel, a critical component in enhancing the capabilities of the Waymo Driver. This role involves architecting and automating the entire ML lifecycle, from data collection to model deployment, in collaboration with infrastructure, modeling, and evaluation teams. The successful candidate will be directly accountable for the organization's ML data strategy and its impact on driver quality.

Key responsibilities include designing a system that integrates every autonomous mile driven into an automated self-improvement loop for the Waymo Driver. This involves enabling scalable pre-training, targeted post-training, and driver simulation and validation. The role also requires coordinating cross-functional efforts to accelerate the impact of driving data on the Waymo Driver, acting as a steward of data quality, and developing strategies for incorporating diverse data sources into the improvement flywheel.

Candidates must possess a Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, with over 10 years of experience in ML model development, including at least 2 years with large-scale vision, video, or multi-modal foundation model development. Additionally, 6+ years of experience in ML-driven production systems and technical leadership roles are required. Demonstrated expertise in large-scale machine learning, a track record of architecting ML flywheels at scale, and strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

The expected base salary range for this full-time position is $332,000 to $421,000 USD annually. Waymo employees are also eligible to participate in the company's discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and a generous benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.
