The Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Central District of California is seeking a full-time Trial Paralegal to join its Los Angeles main office. This role is integral to the office's mission of providing high-quality legal defense to individuals charged with federal crimes who cannot afford private counsel. The Trial Paralegal will collaborate closely with attorneys and other staff to support a wide range of federal cases, including pre-indictment matters, trials, appeals, and habeas proceedings.

Key responsibilities include assisting attorneys in preparing for trials, sentencing, and evidentiary hearings by reviewing, organizing, and analyzing complex discovery materials. The paralegal will create reports, summaries, witness files, and chronologies to aid in developing and implementing defense strategies. Additional duties involve managing client communications, facilitating bail processes, and coordinating materials for expert witnesses. The role also requires proficiency in legal databases, e-discovery platforms, forensic software, and courtroom presentation tools to effectively manage and present evidence. Tasks may also encompass editing audio and video evidence, handling digital files, and conducting legal research using platforms such as PACER, Westlaw, LexisNexis, and Office 365 applications.

Candidates must possess an undergraduate degree and have at least five years of experience as a litigation paralegal, with a focus on trial preparation and support. An advanced technology background is essential, though training will be provided for specific tools utilized by the office. While a paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program is preferred, it is not mandatory. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in state or federal criminal defense. The position may require working varying hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. A background investigation is a prerequisite for employment, and applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents seeking citizenship.

The salary for this full-time position ranges from $70,000 to $130,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits include health and life insurance, retirement plans, and a Thrift Savings Plan. After successfully completing a probationary period, eligible employees may opt to telework up to two days per week, subject to certain conditions.

The Federal Public Defender’s Office fosters a collaborative and mission-driven work environment dedicated to the pursuit of justice. Employees have opportunities for professional growth and development while contributing to meaningful work that upholds the constitutional rights and dignity of individuals within the federal criminal justice system.
