Oversight Counsel
Democracy Forward is seeking an Oversight Counsel to join its team in Washington, D.C. This role involves leading legal and oversight strategies to protect against executive branch overreach, threats to civil rights, abuses of power, and efforts to undermine government transparency. The Oversight Counsel will play a pivotal role in designing and executing strategies for open records requests and related litigation.
Key responsibilities include independently managing a caseload of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) litigation in federal and state courts. This encompasses researching, drafting, and editing court filings such as complaints, motions, and briefs at both trial and appellate levels. The role also involves conducting discovery, participating in evidentiary hearings, and presenting oral arguments. Additionally, the Oversight Counsel will develop and draft FOIA requests aligned with Democracy Forward's litigation strategies and collaborate with the Oversight team to identify and pursue investigative opportunities.
Candidates must possess a J.D. from an accredited law school and be an active member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar or another state bar with the ability to become admitted in D.C. A minimum of 5-8 years of relevant litigation experience is required, with demonstrated excellence in legal research and drafting. Experience in managing complex workflows, handling sensitive information, and working collaboratively within a team is essential.
