Helsing is a defense AI company dedicated to enhancing the capabilities of defense hardware through advanced software and AI solutions. The Multimodal Sensing and Fusion Engineer will play a pivotal role in developing and integrating sensor systems that combine electro-optical (EO) and long-wave infrared (LWIR) cameras, radar, LiDAR, and inertial measurement units (IMUs) to provide comprehensive data inputs for Helsing's AI applications. This position is available in Berlin, London, or Munich, offering the opportunity to work in a dynamic and mission-driven environment.

In this role, the engineer will be responsible for defining the multimodal sensing architecture, selecting and integrating various sensor modalities to optimize algorithm performance. Key tasks include designing and implementing precise time synchronization across heterogeneous sensors using protocols such as PTP/gPTP, PPS, and hardware triggers like Hsync and Vsync. The engineer will also develop comprehensive sensor calibration procedures, encompassing intrinsic, extrinsic, spatial, and temporal aspects, and establish safety concepts to ensure system reliability and graceful degradation in operational environments.

The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. or M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Applied Physics, Robotics, or a related field, or have equivalent professional experience. A proven track record in building multimodal sensing or sensor-fusion systems that combine at least two of the following: EO/LWIR cameras, radar, LiDAR, and IMUs is essential. Expertise in system-level synchronization, sensor calibration, and the ability to derive safety concepts for sensing subsystems are critical. Proficiency in C/C++ or Rust for low-level firmware development, along with Python for tooling, is required.

While specific compensation details are not provided, Helsing offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including relocation support up to €2,500 and four weeks of temporary accommodation. Additional perks include a yearly learning allowance of €500/£450, health and wellness benefits such as gym membership and mental health support, and enhanced parental leave policies. The company also provides family support, including paid family emergency leave and flexible work options during pregnancy and phased return to work.
