As a Model Behavior Tutor at xAI, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our AI system, Grok, engages in careful reasoning, resists motivated reasoning, and communicates uncertainty and evidence proportionately. This position is integral to our mission of creating AI systems that accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge.

Your primary responsibilities will include assessing model outputs for factual accuracy, logical coherence, fallacious reasoning, and hidden assumptions. You will identify subtle ideological biases, statistical fallacies, and rhetorical misdirections. Additionally, you will craft exemplary reasoning that models intellectual honesty, source evaluation, nuanced weighing of primary and secondary sources, and appropriate scoping of confidence. Constructing adversarial examples and red-team prompts to expose remaining epistemic weaknesses will also be part of your duties. Furthermore, you will contribute to defining and scaling constitutional principles for truth-seeking behavior within our AI systems.

The ideal candidate will have published analytical work and academic training in a high-rigor field. A strong forecasting track record, such as participation in platforms like Metaculus or Good Judgment, rigorous analysis, or public updating on errors, is essential. Deep knowledge in at least three of the following disciplines is required: philosophy of science, cognitive psychology, statistics, logic, linguistics, history, economics, or related fields. The ability to steel-man opposing views and distinguish settled knowledge from speculation is crucial. A habitual reliance on primary sources and base rates is also expected.

Preferred qualifications include experience in intelligence analysis, investigative journalism, or academic peer review.

Compensation for U.S.-based candidates ranges from $40 to $70 per hour, depending on factors such as relevant experience, skills, education, geographic location, and qualifications. For international candidates, our recruiting team can provide an estimated pay range for your location. Benefits vary based on employment type, location, and jurisdiction. Eligible U.S.-based positions include health insurance, a 401(k) plan, and paid sick leave. Specific details and role-specific information will be provided during the interview process.

At xAI, we foster a culture of curiosity and engineering excellence. Our flat organizational structure encourages hands-on contributions and rewards initiative and consistent excellence.
