Mechanical Engineering Intern / Co-op, Satellite Bus
GITAI is a vertically integrated space and defense company specializing in developing hardware for low-Earth-orbit missions. The Mechanical Engineering Intern/Co-op role focuses on hardware development for the Space-Based Interceptor program, encompassing satellite bus components, rocket motor hardware, mechanical interfaces, prototypes, ground support equipment, and test fixtures. This position offers hands-on experience in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, requiring collaboration across various engineering disciplines.
Key responsibilities include designing and updating mechanical components using 3D CAD and engineering drawings, collaborating with engineers, technicians, machinists, suppliers, and test personnel to transform early concepts into buildable hardware, and supporting fabrication, assembly, inspection, integration, and testing activities. The role also involves investigating manufacturing problems, integration issues, and test failures, documenting hardware configurations and design decisions, and supporting field tests outside the Torrance office when required.
Candidates should be currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field, with at least one year of sustained participation in a technically rigorous student engineering project. Experience in hardware development stages, proficiency in a professional 3D CAD system (SolidWorks preferred), and the ability to work fully onsite at GITAI’s office in Torrance, California, are essential. U.S. citizenship is required due to potential access to export-controlled and government-controlled information.
The compensation for this part-time, temporary, non-exempt position ranges from $25 to $40 per hour, determined based on academic level, relevant technical experience, and demonstrated hands-on engineering capability. Typical work hours are Monday to Friday, approximately 9:00 am – 6:00 pm onsite, with flexibility expected based on mission schedules and program needs.
GITAI offers a collaborative and innovative work environment, emphasizing vertical integration to accelerate development cycles and foster direct learning from hardware. Employees are encouraged to take ownership of projects, work across functional boundaries, and engage in hands-on work to advance hardware development. The company is committed to providing a safe and affordable means of labor in space, aiming to support the construction and maintenance of space colonies and cities on the Moon and Mars.
