The ideal candidate will possess deep knowledge of the legal services sector, refined analytical capabilities, and a proven track record in supporting practice development decisions and client-focused initiatives.

Key responsibilities include leading competitive intelligence research and analysis, producing strategic reports on key competitors, market shifts, and emerging industry trends. The role also involves monitoring industry and regulatory developments affecting the legal services market, producing concise briefing materials and executive-level reports to support strategic planning, business development, innovation, and investment decisions. Additionally, the position requires developing and maintaining competitive intelligence frameworks and research methodologies, conducting competitive market benchmarking, opportunity assessments, client portfolio analysis, and white-space research. Supporting strategic projects related to growth initiatives, lateral hiring analysis, geographic expansion, and product/service development is also essential. Ensuring compliance with ethical and professional standards in competitive intelligence activities and engaging in coaching, mentoring, and developing competitive intelligence skills across the team are also part of the role.

Candidates should have 6-10 years of experience in competitive intelligence, research/analysis, or strategic planning within a law firm or professional services environment. A proven track record in producing intelligence deliverables that inform senior-level strategic decisions is required. Demonstrated intellectual curiosity and deep knowledge of the legal services industry, including business models, client dynamics, industry terminology, competitors, and the competitive environment, are essential. Expert analytical, critical thinking, and synthesis skills, with the ability to work with large data sets and advanced data visualization, are necessary. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create high-quality, executive-ready materials, content, and dashboards, are important. Strong project and program management and organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines, are also required. High ethical standards and understanding of competitive intelligence best practices and legal boundaries are crucial. Experience in team development, including mentoring and developing junior members of the team, and fostering a collaborative team environment, is preferred. Proficiency in utilizing advanced research tools, GenAI capabilities, and data platforms, including Capital IQ, PitchBook, Refinitiv, Bloomberg, and other market intelligence tools, as well as MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel), is expected.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $200,000 to $250,000 per year. The actual salary offered will depend on various factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job. This role is exempt, meaning it is not overtime pay eligible. Simpson Thacher will not sponsor applicants for work visas for this position.
