Manager, Safety Operations

As a Safety Operations Manager at xAI, you will lead a team of Safety Operations Analysts dedicated to training and refining Grok, our AI system, to enforce our terms of service and support functions. Your leadership will directly impact the safety of our products by minimizing existential risks, enforcing xAI’s rules, and promoting responsible development to prevent illegal and harmful content.

In this role, you will oversee the monitoring of content and behavior that violates our terms of service, ensuring appropriate actions are taken and escalated when necessary. You will manage the processing of appeals, ensure accurate labeling of use cases, and guide the team in using proprietary software for safety protocols, risk scenarios, and policy compliance. Additionally, you will mentor team members, conduct performance management, and implement process improvements to enhance AI defenses against unethical behavior.

The ideal candidate will have proven leadership and people management experience in AI-driven operations, with a track record of developing high-performing teams. Expertise in improving Large Language Models (LLMs) to maximize enforcement efficiencies and the ability to propose solutions to enhance platform security and safety are essential. Experience in online safety, ethical reasoning, risk assessment, and team performance optimization is also required.

This position is based on-site at our Bastrop, TX office, with coverage required from either Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday to Thursday shifts. Please note that the role may involve exposure to sensitive or graphic content, including vulgar language, violent threats, and other graphic images.
